Peer Benchmarking: A Powerful Tool for IT Portfolio Planning

How can we engage stakeholders in a productive conversation about campus priorities and new funding requests? One effective approach is to provide them with data comparing local service offerings with those offered by peer institutions. From faculty members to senior administrators, everyone wants to know how their university ranks relative to its peers. This data helps with resource prioritization and generates support for new funding requests.

During the Spring 2013 semester, UC Berkeley created a project to review and benchmark twenty three services that support research and teaching. The project team was comprised of staff from central IT, the library, academic technology, research IT, and several other departments. In this presentation, project manager Noah Wittman summarizes project methodology, offering tips and templates for IT colleagues interested in emulating this approach.
